A mama’s reflections on life, love, parenting and everything in between

These boys, they are a delight. David is reading full on and finding his social side, slowly but surely. He’s getting better at saying words with the letter “R” in them, thanks to increased straw usage when drinking, and, I think, just getting older. He’s got this thing now about rebelling against the simple day-to-day stuff and we are working on the art of appropriate negotiation. Finicky Fives I guess.  He’s excited about starting school, and I’ll be sad to miss my snuggle partner during the odd nap we take together. I’m so proud of him. He’s a great kid.

Lucas in the car is a running monologue for all the vehicles on the road:” Big Digger! Red Fire truck! Blue Car! Big Truck! Driving mama’s car! ”  He doesn’t miss a thing these days.  Yesterday he said to me ” I need more pancakes mom.” Clear as day. Kiel and I both dropped our jaws at the same time. It was impressive. He is really starting to get into books, and even re-tells the story to you before you read the book. I love that.  Tom and Pippo are a big hit and thankfully, our local library has lots of their books. Lucas reminds me of Tom, and of course, Lucas’ “Friend Dog” is Pippo.  That dog is his best friend, next to his brother. Lucas puts 3-5 words together these days, pretty routinely. I attribute that mostly to David being around and all the talking we do around the house because there are two of them now.  That word ‘NO’ is still prevalent in Lucas’ vocabulary. Except now he says, “I don’t want to!” or “I don’t like it!” or “No pee-pee in the house mom.” as he tried to pee through the screen door onto the porch after his bath the other night. Life is never dull.

Lucas is full on talking now. He loves to name things and says them and looks at you for approval. Yes, those are trees…yes, that is a dog…yes, we will put your mittens on.  I love how a word can be both a statement or a question to a budding linguist.  If he’s holding the object it’s a statement of fact. Socks!!!!  If he’s in the process of doing something, like getting winter clothes on it’s:  Hat? As, naturally, that is what comes next. I figure that he has about 150 words now and he eagerly parrots just about anything. Some of the words are not entirely clear, but most are. He’s figured out that Please gets  him things faster and will readily employ that when needed. Thank You is just not useful yet.  His favorite word right now is NO. We are working hard at teaching him YES.  He will use both in context, so, the NO we get much of the time is about 50%  No, I don’t want that, and about 50% I’m just doing this to be contrary and see what happens next.   Thankfully, we know this is a phase and we are trying to be consistent in our approach.  It can make for long days when Mr. Opposite shows up.  Most of the time though, his talking is delightful and I know that David has really spurred Lucas on in this endeavor. Thanks “Day-day”, as Lucas would say.

Lucas is talking.  He loves to talk on the phone, just don’t be upset if he hangs up on you. He gives fabulous morning speeches, and some times you can see his brain trying so hard to make his mouth repeat what you’ve just said.  It’s such a fun time.  His favorite game is to say “bear” during his diaper change and then you tickle him. He starts laughing as soon as he says it, and you can’t help but give him what he wants.

So, here’s the vocab thus far:

11/3/08:  Mama, Dada, Dog, Bear, Pepe, Daaay (David), Duck, Hat, Hot, Up, Book, Dat (that), Dis (this), Bye-bye,  Hi Apple, Star, Stop/Go: (yelled at the top of his lungs in the car…oh what fun!) All Done, All Gone, Otter  and my current favorite: ch-jhu ( for when he wants his diaper changed….)

He signs: please more and blows kisses now.  New words he’s trying : please, washed, rain
